Next Generation technology increases control range
Grodan introduces improved Grotop slabs

Grodan, supplier of innovative substrate solutions for the greenhouse horticulture sector, has introduced an improved line of Grotop slabs under the ‘Next Generation’ brand name. The major benefits offered by these slabs are improved resaturation, rooting, uniformity, and an increased control range. Grodan’s introduction of these Next Generation slabs accommodates professional growers’ needs for crops of an optimum quality and quantity.

Grodan developed the Next Generation technology as an innovative answer to the rapid changes in the horticultural sector, in which increases in scale and new cultivation systems compel growers to implement continual changes in their operations. Grodan’s long-term development programme for this technology of the future has certainly achieved spectacular results! Measurements reveal a great improvement in the resaturation, rooting and uniformity of substrate solutions based on the Next Generation technology.

The improved slab properties result in an increased control range, as well as a more uniform WC and EC distribution both within slabs and between slabs. Tests comparing the Next Generation slabs with the existing products demonstrate that the new slabs offer growers the possibility to substantially increase yields. In addition, the more targeted water management yields fruit of an improved quality. Consequently Grodan is convinced that the new, advanced slabs offer an even better solution for the increasingly stringent requirements professional growers impose on controllable substrates and targeted water management.

Grodan’s Next Generation technology has been incorporated in the improved Grotop Master and Grotop Expert slabs.

Grotop Master

The improved Grotop Master slab constitutes the solution for growers in need of professional water management to improve the quality and quantity of their crops. The greatly improved resaturation properties and increased control range simplify the achievement of the required water content and EC level in the slabs. This in turn results in the more even distribution of the roots throughout the slab, thereby achieving a substantial increase in the absorptive capacity.

The improved resaturation capacity results in more efficient EC replacement, and with less drain. The increased control range enables growers to steer the crop towards the vegetative or generative growth they require. The combination of a ‘solid’ top layer and ‘porous’ under layer results in a more homogenous distribution of the WC and EC. This promotes optimum rooting development throughout the entire slab, even into the upper regions, thereby guaranteeing a healthy and vigorous crop.

Grotop Expert
The improved Grotop Expert slab (launched on the market at the end of 2006) constitutes the solution for growers who opt for a substrate with a wide control range, a uniform crop structure and plants with maximum vigour throughout the entire cultivation period. This slab is characterised by the extremely rapid rooting and initial development of the plant that guarantee vegetative growth. The special fibrous structure enables the roots to penetrate the entire slab, thereby resulting in a more uniform root distribution.

The increased WC and EC control range offers growers an opportunity to promote the required form of crop growth during every phase of the cultivation. The slab provides both for the improved water content of the slab and the ability to adjust the water content more rapidly. Consequently the risk of the upper regions of the slab drying out is reduced tenfold. Moreover, the water content can be restored with the greatest of ease – and with great speed. Consequently even in the event of a dramatic decline in the water content a resaturation of more than seventy percent is still feasible.

Corporate information:

Grodan, founded in 1969, is active in more than forty countries. The headquarters are located in Roermond, the Netherlands. Grodan supplies innovative cultivation solutions to the professional horticultural sector comprised of clean and controllable substrate, in combination with advice and support services. Grodan’s substrates constitute the alternative for soil for the professional horticulture sector. Cultivation using these substrates is not only considerably more environmentally-friendly and easier to manage; it also offers an increased yield, better quality and the opportunity to make savings in fertilizer, water, and energy consumption. The solutions are, in particular, employed in the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, such as tomato, cucumber, sweet pepper, aubergine, roses, and gerberas.

Grodan is a member of the Rockwool Group, the global market leader in products manufactured on the basis of stone wool. The various Rockwool companies manufacture a large and wide range of stone-wool products that make optimum use of stone wool’s unique properties. Rockwool’s 22 factories in 14 countries generate a turnover of more than 1.2 billion and offer jobs to some 7,200 employees. The headquarters are in Denmark, near Copenhagen.
